In the mountains light_ steep hikes with a small backpack

In a hike, you can climb somewhere higher in the mountains or go deeper into the forest, watch the sunsets on the deserted ocean shore, count the stars where the lights of a big city do not extinguish, wake up at dawn in a tent, brush your teeth in the river and smile at the sun listening to Birdsong. But what to do if you carry on yourself a huge 80-litre backpack with a tent, a sleeping bag, pots and a week’s supply do not feel like it at all. Fortunately, the golden mean exists, and you can go hiking for several days almost lightly. Today we will tell you about a couple of such options.

Three days on a volcano in Indonesia

One of the highest volcanoes in Indonesia is called Rinjani and is located on the island of Lombok. Its rather impressive oval-shaped crater 6.5 by 8 kilometres contains a small, slightly steaming nozzle, a huge lake and hot springs. From April to December, that is, in the dry season, when there is little rainfall, residents of the Senaru region at the foot of the volcano organize three-day trekking to the summit for tourists. Groups recruit small ones, up to 8 people per guide, and the charm of the trip is that tents, sleeping bags, water, food and torches are carried by porters (porters), but you need to take with you only warm clothes and snacks, for example, nuts, dried fruit and chocolate.

On the first day, you will be taken to the starting point by minibus, introduced to the guide and sent on a hike. Two hours on the hills with a slight slope up, lunch, about three hours on the already rather steep slope, and just before sunset you find yourself on the edge of the crater, above the clouds. At this point, it is important to immediately remove the soaked things and put on dry, as soon as the sun is gone, it will be very cold. While you are spending the day and admiring the scenery, porters are already laying out tents and preparing dinner, after which, over tea, you can see a trillion stars of the Milky Way. Then there are two options: you can sleep until morning, and you can get up at 3 o’clock in the morning and meet dawn on the highest point of the volcano, walk to it about one and a half kilometres, but the last 300 meters is an almost vertical wall of volcanic sand, the rise of which is stepping forward two back. To tell you the truth, the view is not very different from the one that is waiting for you in the place of an overnight stay, so this is more likely a test for those who want to test themselves. Breakfast on the second day is prepared for hours by 7 am, after which the descent to the crater begins. Just a couple of hours and you are already below, on the shore of the lake, ahead is a day of outdoor recreation. A refreshing swim in the lake should be alternated with hot baths of nearby springs, make a fire and bait in the evening. On the third day, you will have to go a lot: up to the opposite border of the crater and down to the foot, but it is easier to descend from this site, you get an intensive walk through the forest with a lunch break. after which the descent to the crater begins. In such a trip, trekking sticks, ascents and descents will be steep in some places, so an additional point of support does not hurt. Comfortable shoes, warm pants, a sweater and a jacket – that’s all you need to take with you. The tour can be booked in advance by agreeing on a transfer from the airport or port, or you can arrive by car and bring down the price. The cost varies from $ 100 to $ 200 per person and depends on the season and your ability to bargain.

Trekking in the mountains of Krasnaya Polyana

Cool hiking in the mountains “light” is in Russia, for example, in Krasnaya Polyana. A simple and pleasant route to the Bzerpinsky cornice can be walked in one day, or you can stretch into three, complementing your trip to the lakes and the glacier. First, you need to climb from the village of Esto-Sadok on the cable car GPP “Alpika-Service” to an altitude of 1,660 meters. It takes about half an hour, and from the booth offers a stunning view of the gorge and Rosa Khutor. The walking route starts right from the cable car station: a short gravel road runs through flower fields and leads into the fir forest. The path rises quite steeply through the forest, but not for a long time, just an hour and a half, and you can take a break and read information posters about the history of these places on the Bear Gate Gate, where comfortable benches are equipped. After the pass the road bends around the mountain under a slight incline here you are surrounded by bright colourful meadows and small graceful birch trees. It is literally an hour of such a journey, and you will have a view of the valley where the tent camp is set up. Thanks to him, you can go to the mountains with a light backpack – tents and sleeping bags are rented, and in the centre of the camp there is a large tent with a kitchen, where there are burners and dishes. There is also no need to carry a lot of water, a pure mountain stream flows right next to the camp. Even the “amenities” are equipped here, so it turns out almost a hotel in the open. Leaving things in a tent, then you can walk quite lightly: in the evening you can climb to the peak of Bzerpi and see how the sunset rays illuminate the multi-layered perspective of mountain ranges. The next day, waking up early will not be difficult, because by 7 o’clock the sun is peeking out from behind the mountain and how to warm the tent. After breakfast, again light, go to the lakes. The path winds through the alpine meadows crosses the Pseashha Pass and leads directly to the Dzitaku Valley with several lakes and a 6,000-year-old relict sphagnum bog. The road to the lakes takes about two hours, back, respectively, the same, so if you plan to return to the city on the same day, you need to keep track of the time, since the cable car is only open until 17:30. Those who love easy trips, of course, should stay for one more night.

You can even go on this trip in regular sneakers, and with you, you need warm clothes for the evening and night, water for the journey and food for all days. The cost of the lift is 900 rubles, the rent of a tent and a sleeping bag is 600 rubles per night per person plus you need permission to stay in a conservation area that is bought at the cable car station and costs 300 rubles per day. The number of fans of “light” campaigns is constantly growing because after learning that you can get into such beauty without making a lot of effort, anyone will want to go and also tell friends. Similar camps and organized hikes are not uncommon, and there are in many cities and countries. Look, you will not regret!
